Saareeraka Upanishad — 3

Aim Sri Saaradaadevyai namah.

Saareeraka Upanishad~3.

This Upanishad directly deals with almost all the fundamental concepts of the subjective sciences of the Vedanta, Yoga, Karmayoga, Bhaktiyoga and many others which help various
spiritual seekers of different orders and disciplines. As we already finished the Saanti Mantra in the preceding part, now we take up the first mantra for our study. Here it is:

1. “Aum. Prithivi aadi mahaa bhootaanaam samavaayam sareeram;
yat kathinam saa
prithivee,
yat dravam tat aapah,
yat ushnam tat tejah,
yat sancharati sah vaayuh,
yat
sushiram tat aakaasam“.

“I submit my love to the all-inclusive fundamental and eternal source to “AUM” in Which I dwell and Which dwells in me simultaneously and evrelastingly. The (human) body is composed of the great (basic five) elements such as the Earth and so on. It is popularly known that there are five fundamental elements in this entire universe. An element is the basic component with which some thing else can be produced by either modifying it or by allowing it to combine with some other element or elements and undergo a process. According to Vedic Rishis there are five basic great elements or mahaa bhootas. They are the Earth, the Water, the Fire, the Air, and the Space. When the Rishis said that there are Mahaa Bhootas, logically it implies that they are aware that there are “alpa bhootas” (or minor or sub-elements) which are, in turn, produced by these five fundamental Mahaa Bhootas only.

Now various items of proof are being placed before the student of this sacred knowledge in order to help him understand the cardinal realities of his existence. Whatever is hard (in the human body), is of the element of the earth, is in fluid-state, is of the element of water, is hot, is of fire-element, whatever that moves is of air, whatever is in vacuum-state is produced by the space-element (sushiram=hole). In this manner all the five basic elements are the Cardinal constituents of the physical body of the human being.

    As the name of the Upanishad is ‘Saareeraka’ , it is demonstrating “Paanchabhowtika Deham” from the first mantra itself explaining how human body is composed with the five basic elements of the universe.
    The meaning of Pranavam (Aim) is said simply and clearly.
