SANAATANA SAARADAA—1.

Today is an auspicious day to start our new series on various fields of our ancient Indian culture such as philosophy, literature, music, dance, drama, metaphysics, art, architecture, and so on.

I start with Ur various doubts and questions expressed by U in Ur initial post. In that, U spoke of “Lakshmana

Rekha” in Srimad Raamaayana. Actually, either in Vaalmeeki Raamaayana or in Tulasi Raamaayana there is no mention of any “rekha” as such. Vaalmeeki Raamaayana is the supreme and most dependable version in its authenticity.

Lakshmana left Seetaadevi in the Aasrama without drawing any protective line with his arrow, according to Vaalmeeki. In some other versions of Raamaayana rendered into regional languages or in Sanskrit Champu versions, some authors might have taken some liberty in the name of “poetic license” and so should

have invented and included this “rekha-episode” in order to achieve some dramatic sensation. So lakshmana rekha is absolutely a fiction and not at all a fact.

Of course, though not a fact, it really helped people to understand well that there should be a boundary which none is justified to transgress or even over-step. This is a good warning in general for the entire humanity

that can be inferred from this fictional episode.

I really enjoyed reading it. I also understand that, Lakshman Rekha , it should be, a line of limitations, either drawn by society or self. You helped me in understanding the inner meaning. Thank you very much.

Lakshamana Rekha episode in Srimad Raamaayana which is not in the original text of Valmiki but only an added version by some poets is really surprising. Thank u for revealing the true fact. But its message to the people as conveyed by u is applicable even today.
